    Plasticiet Dutch Design Awards

    Dezeen’s favourite furniture

    Date: 31.10.2025

Custom Mother of Pearl furniture by Plasticiet for Jil Sander, developed with Casper Mueller Kneer Architects, featuring rounded forms and marbled surfaces.

At Dutch Design Week 2025, Plasticiet presents a new series of Mother of Pearl furniture pieces, developed in collaboration with Jil Sander and initiated by Casper Mueller Kneer Architects (CMK). The presentation follows Plasticiet's recognition as Dutch Design Award Emerging Talent 2025, marking a significant moment for the Delft based studio and its material-led approach to circular design.

The collaboration with CMK began in 2022, opening up space to explore the full range of applications for Mother of pearl. Through extensive experimentation, the bending of sheets emerged as a defining feature. This capability enabled the creation of stools, benches, vitrines and display podiums with large rounded legs and soft geometries for Jil Sander's retail spaces, that are traditionally curated in stone.

An exclusive colour palette was developed for the stores, initially grounded with earthy tones that complement the warmth and texture. Over time, the material evolved into more vibrant expressions. Deep greens, blues and reds now introduce contrast with Jil sander's calm, contemporary interiors adding a playful tension while allowing the material itself to communicate a shift toward more refined sustainable solution in retail design.

At Forward Furniture at De Caai during DDW 2025, the collection features cylindrical and cuboid forms of the vibrant colours, with many more remaining possible. The collaboration continues to evolve through ongoing experimentation, reinforcing Plasticiet's commitment to curiosity and material exploration. Each piece is part of a wider playground where recycled plastic becomes a source of enduring value and unexpected beauty.
