At V&A East Storehouse, the story continues after installation. Offcuts from the museum's wayfinding scheme prove that even the smallest pieces can begin a new design journey.

A shared approach

Every Material Rescue project begins with recognising opportunity in what already exists. Following completion of the V&A East Storehouse wayfinding project, unused offcuts were returned to us instead of being discarded.

The Next Chapter 

Each offcut is inspected, trimmed and prepared for its next application. Rather than becoming waste, many of the pieces continue their journey through new projects and conversations.

The rescued offcuts are sent to Renee Materials, where they're transformed into curated sample collections for architects, designers and specifiers.

Not every piece follows the same path. Where offcuts are unsuitable for reuse as samples, they are responsibly redirected for recycling through Durat, ensuring the material continues to contribute to the circular economy wherever possible.

As Renee Materials puts it, they work to "reduce waste and cut emissions by offering businesses' offcuts, surplus stock and leftover materials for reuse." This shared approach demonstrates how collaboration can unlock new value from resources that might otherwise be overlooked.

A continuing journey

Circular design isn't only about where materials come from, it's about where they go next.
