    material sweet shop

    Date: 21.03.2024

Since 2013 we have worked with some of the most inspiring materials out there, from sheets made of paper to panels that play with light. Back for our second year at Surface Design Show, Surface Matter are opening a pop-up sweet shop of materials that don’t just ‘do the job’, they ’make’ the job.

Dive into our sweet shop inspired displays with a modern twist - LED lights sprinkled like 100s and 1000s, bowls filled with miniature samples and raw material shreds. Learn about sustainable materials and how they're made while you tuck into re-imagined sweet styles samples like colourful terrazzo nougat made of recycled sold surface, chocolate bars of compressed paper composite and translucent honeycomb lollipops.

Designed and built by Shape Studio, the stand was inspired by our Hackney-based material studio, which architects and designers have often called a ‘sweet shop’. Having been re-vamped from last year, the stand’s design focuses on end-of-life and reuse, material innovation, process and engagement.

Surface Matter’s materials are also part of Sally Angharad's curation Surface Spotlight Live. Themed Close to Home it highlights designers and manufacturers who focus on local ingredients and incorporate recycled and waste content.
