Since 2013 we have worked with some of the most inspiring materials out there, from sheets made of paper to panels that play with light. Back for our second year at Surface Design Show, Surface Matter are opening a pop-up sweet shop of materials that don’t just ‘do the job’, they ’make’ the job.
Dive into our sweet shop inspired displays with a modern twist - LED lights sprinkled like 100s and 1000s, bowls filled with miniature samples and raw material shreds. Learn about sustainable materials and how they're made while you tuck into re-imagined sweet styles samples like colourful terrazzo nougat made of Durat recycled sold surface, chocolate bars of compressed paper composite Richlite and translucent Bencore honeycomb lollipops.
Designed and built by Shape Studio, the stand was inspired by our Hackney-based materials library, which architects and designers have often called a ‘sweet shop’. Having been re-vamped from last year, the stand’s design focuses on end-of-life and reuse, material innovation, process and engagement.
Product launches on show include a new colourway for The Palace Collection, created in collaboration between Durat and MOST Collective - the only solid surface to incorporate raw earth minerals and natural pigments from an 18th century Dutch paint mill. Becoming the first translucent honeycomb material with recycled and recyclable content, Bencore have started using 100% recycled clear acrylic skins and recycled colour is planned later this year. Richlite have also developed a new colour of their ultra-strong paper composites - Rosedale is an alternative to the rapidly-depleted exotic hardwood, rosewood.
Surface Matter’s core materials have also been selected for Sally Angharad's curation for Surface Spotlight Live - Close to Home - that highlights designers/manufacturers who focus on local ingredients and recycled or waste content.
Surface Matter will be on hand to talk about our wonder-materials throughout the show. To celebrate the opening evening we invite you to our stand 18.00-21.00pm Feb 11th to break into some award-winning Brik Chocolate terrazzo.
